Development of a landslide early warning system is easily said than done. Internationally, this is a matter of research and development. KSEOC has joined hands in developing a customised landslide early warning system for Kerala. In order to ensure that multiple types of technologies and research are fostered in the domain, three parallel attempts are supported by KSEOC, they being:

  1. Kerala University: A project on rainfall thresholds for landslide early warning was proposed by Department of Geology, Kerala University. The project is supported by KSDMA.
  2. Kerala Development & Innovation Strategic Council (K-DISC) – Emerging Technology Project – Landslide Prediction 2020: A project proposed and supported by K-DISC, the project intents to develop a landslide prediction system in Kerala utilising the support of M/S Orbital Micro Systems India Pvt. Ltd.
  3. Geological Survey of India 2020: A project has been proposed to pilot a landslide early warning system in selected locations. An MoU is to be signed between Kerala and GSI for the purpose.

These pilot projects were approved by the State Executive Committee of KSDMA held on 8-10-2020.
