Vadakarapathi Panchayath of Palakkad District is one of the most dry parts of the State. There are many abandoned or not so well maintained ponds which could be augmented and rain water collected to reduce drought risks in the area. The KSDMA requested the support of National Centre for Earth Science Studies in 2016 to implement a model project to demonstrate and document Groundwater recharge by renovation of ponds in-order to reduce drought risks. The NCESS implemented a detailed project and submitted the final report of the project on January 2019. The report may be found here.
