The Tsunami Mock Drill 2016 is an endeavour of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. Kerala is for the first time conducting such a state wide mock drill covering multiple districts and departments.
All major responding departments, they being the Revenue, Police (Law and Order), Coastal Police, State Disaster Response Force and Health and Central Forces namely Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Indo-Tibetan Boarder Police and National Disaster Response Force will be involved in the mock drill. The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority will be coordinating the event.
As the State Incident Commander, the Chief Secretary will be personally monitoring and directing the field operations through the State Emergency Operations Centre of KSDMA. The District Emergency Operations Centres of the 9 coastal districts (Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasargode) will function under the District Collectors, they being the District Incident Commanders. Through this exercise we wish to test ourselves the ability to respond promptly to a warning issued by Indian National Ocean Information Services. This is also a learning attempt for the state’s emergency response mechanism as to evaluate self critically their ability to respond on time. The event will be simulated in 9 beaches of the 9 coastal districts parallely. It will start at 12.30 pm and continue till 6.30 pm. Considering the ground conditions, the field response operations may be over by 4.45 after which all districts are to conduct an onsite debriefing and a debriefing at the DEOC.
