Living Lab operates as an interactive, real-world platform that brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including government agencies, academic institutions, private sector partners, community organizations, and local residents. It enables collaborative learning, innovation, and the testing of context-specific solutions in real-life settings. Through shared resources and active participation, Living Labs support the generation of new knowledge, the refinement of existing tools, the validation of technologies and processes, and the strengthening of both professional and community-level capacities. By functioning in realistic environments and emphasizing participatory problem-solving, Living Labs promote sustainable, impactful, and scalable approaches to disaster resilience.
Kanichar Grama Panchayath faced severe challenges during the consecutive landslides of August and September 2022, which led to the tragic loss of lives and extensive damage to livelihoods, agricultural lands, residential buildings, internal roads, and critical infrastructure such as bridges. In response to these events, the Hon’ble Chairman of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority directed the Authority to initiate appropriate interventions, following which the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) launched the Living Lab Project in Kanichar. The project aims to develop a community-centric, evidence-based model for disaster resilience. The primary objective of the Living Lab is to strengthen the community’s capacity to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from natural hazards, while simultaneously creating a replicable framework for other Local Self Governments (LSGs) across Kerala facing similar risk conditions.
