Since 2010, Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has been involved in ensuring the safety of children by implementing various programmes in the State along with the Education Department. Complying to the National Guidelines on School Safety (2016), a state level advisory committee was formed vide GO (Rt) No. 271/2018/DMD dated 11-05-2018. To monitor the implementation of the school safety activities, a consolidated quarterly report is being sent by KSDMA to NDMA.
Post Disaster Needs Assessment of 2018 observed that 1613 schools in the State were affected due to floods and hence with the support of UNDP, a pilot school safety programme was launched in the state. Two schools of every district implemented school safety project. The activities included training students/teachers/non-teaching staff in school safety, conducting mock drills, forming school safety committee and preparing school safety plans.
To ensure inclusion of children with special needs, these resource materials are also prepared for children with disabilities. Materials in sign language and braille are available for special schools, on request from KSDMA.
KSDMA is collaborating with UNICEF to enhance preparedness and resilience among the various stakeholders, thereby ensuring safer schools.
